30 Years of Healing: The Ozone Layer's Recovery Story
Three decades after the Montreal Protocol entered into force, the ozone layer is showing clear signs of recovery. The 2022 Scientific Assessment confirmed that the ozone layer is on track to return to 1980 levels by mid-century.
What the science shows
Stratospheric chlorine concentrations peaked around 1997 and have been declining steadily. The Antarctic ozone hole, while still forming each spring, is smaller and shallower than at its worst in the early 2000s. Arctic ozone is recovering faster due to different meteorological conditions.
Seychelles' contribution
Seychelles has maintained full compliance with all Montreal Protocol obligations since ratification. The country phased out CFCs ahead of schedule, has met every HCFC reduction target, and is now among the first Article 5 countries to ratify the Kigali Amendment.
